TOP 10 COUNTRIES TO VISIT IN SUMMER 2026
If you still haven't booked anything for summer you are genuinely running out of time. flights are not sitting there waiting for you. You keep saying you'll figure it out and then you don't and then it's September and you're looking at photos other people took. don't be that person. Book something.
I spent way too long falling down travel rabbit holes —
reddit threads at 1am, youtube vlogs, forums full of strangers arguing about
the best ramen in Tokyo. No regrets. Here's what came out of it.
1. Japan
Japan is the trip that makes every other trip feel slightly
worse by comparison and i say that with full awareness of how annoying that
sounds. everything just works. Trains are on time. Streets are clean. A 7-eleven onigiri costs like $2 and is better than food you've paid actual money
for at home. It's almost irritating.
Tokyo will swallow your whole itinerary if you let it and
honestly just let it. Wander Shinjuku at night when it's loud and neon and
completely overwhelming. Get lost in Harajuku. Find a tiny ramen spot with a
ticket machine and eight seats and eat there and feel like you found something.
Kyoto is the slower version — temples, bamboo, that famous torii gate path at Fushimi
inari that you have to do early morning before every other tourist on earth
shows up. Hokkaido is cooler, quieter, lavender fields, incredible seafood, a
fraction of the people.
Also Japan is safe in a way that genuinely unclenches you. You can leave your bag on a chair and walk away. Small thing until you've been
somewhere you couldn't do that.
don't miss: Tokyo at night, Kyoto temples, mount fuji, Hokkaido

2. Norway
Norway is nature just going completely unhinged. The fjords
are these massive walls of rock dropping straight into water with waterfalls
running down the sides and tiny villages at the bottom that look photoshopped. You take a photo and it looks edited. It's not.
Summer means midnight sun, which sounds like a novelty until
you're hiking at 10pm in full daylight and eating dinner at 9 and completely
losing track of what time means. Lofoten islands are the ones all over
instagram — red fishing cabins, still water, mountains rising straight out of
the sea — and they actually look like that in real life which is rare. Bergen
is colorful and walkable. Oslo is calm and clean and has good museums.
Trolltunga is the hike people talk about. 22 km round trip,
brutal, takes most people ten hours, ends on a rock jutting over a fjord with
nothing below you for hundreds of meters. Worth it if your legs can handle it. Mine barely could.
don't miss: Geirangerfjord, Lofoten, Bergen, Trolltunga
3. Canada
Nobody talks about Canada as a summer destination and it's
genuinely baffling to me. The Canadian rockies in summer are some of the most
beautiful places on earth and i'm not being dramatic.
Banff is the centerpiece — turquoise lakes that look fake
but aren't, mountains everywhere you look, hiking for every level from
"pleasant walk" to "I'm training for something serious."
moraine lake specifically hits you when you first see it. like physically. Vancouver
does that thing where it mixes city and mountains and ocean and somehow pulls
it off, plus has the best Asian food outside of Asia which is not a small
thing. Toronto is a real world-class city that people underestimate — diverse,
walkable, actually fun.
Niagara falls is touristy and a little tacky and you're
still going because it's Niagara falls and standing there watching that much
water go over the edge does something weird to your chest.
don't miss: Banff, moraine lake, Vancouver food, Niagara
4. Spain
Spain has figured something out that most countries haven't. The whole place runs on a schedule built around eating well, staying out too
late, and not stressing — and being around that energy for a week is actually
therapeutic in a way that sounds cheesy but isn't.
Barcelona has this pull to it. Madrid is grander, more
old-school, has world-class art museums. Seville is beautiful and hot with
flamenco happening in plazas. the coast is exactly what you want — warm water,
good seafood, actual sun.
The food connects all of it. Tapas with wine, paella by the
water, churros dipped in thick chocolate at midnight. Spain takes eating
seriously and you will benefit from this.
don't miss: Barcelona's architecture, Madrid, Seville,
costa del sol
5. New Zealand
Small geography thing — nz is southern hemisphere so their
winter lines up with our summer. Mild winter, still. if that's a dealbreaker
skip this one. But if you run hot and hate crowds and want dramatic scenery
without melting, this is your situation.
Queenstown is the adventure capital of the southern
hemisphere and earns it every day. Bungee jumping was literally invented here. You can skydive, paraglide, jet boat through canyon rapids, and then walk to a
restaurant for dinner with mountains and a lake behind you. Milford sound is
another level — fiords, waterfalls, seals on rocks, dolphins if you're lucky. The whole country is safe and gorgeous and the people there are so laid-back it
becomes contagious.
don't miss: Queenstown, Milford sound, Rotorua, mount
cook
6. Thailand
Thailand is the place that makes you stop stressing about
travel. Accessible, beautiful, and cheap in a way that makes you look at the
bill twice. The food alone is reason enough.
Bangkok shouldn't work as a city — too big, too chaotic, too
many things happening at once — but it completely works. Temples next to malls
next to street food carts next to rooftop bars. Chatuchak weekend market is an
entire world inside a market, you go in for twenty minutes and come out two
hours later holding stuff you didn't plan on buying. Phuket and Krabi are the
beach destinations with the famous turquoise water and limestone cliffs,
touristy because they deserve to be. Chiang Mai is cooler, quieter, temples and
night markets and actual breathing room.
The food is everywhere and it's all good and most of it
costs almost nothing. You will eat better here for less money than anywhere
else on this list.
don't miss: Bangkok, phi phi islands, Chiang Mai, Krabi
7. Switzerland
Switzerland is expensive. genuinely expensive. You will
stand in line for a coffee and a sandwich and do the math in your head and feel
things. I'm telling you this upfront so it's not a surprise.
What that money gets you is some of the most insane mountain
scenery on the planet. The alps in summer — wildflower meadows, cable cars to
viewpoints where you can see into three countries, air that tastes different. Interlaken
is the adventure base surrounded by lakes and peaks, with access to Jungfraujoch
at 3,400m which calls itself the top of Europe and is not exaggerating. Zermatt
is car-free and sits right at the foot of the Matterhorn, which looks exactly
like every chocolate box you've ever seen.
The train system is also worth writing home about on its
own. Scenic mountain routes, panoramic windows, everything exactly on time. It's genuinely one of the best travel experiences in Europe and it's just
public transport.
don't miss: Interlaken, Jungfraujoch, Zermatt, any scenic
train

8. Turkey
Turkey is the destination people haven't done yet but can't
stop hearing about from everyone who has, and that cycle keeps going because
turkey just delivers.
Istanbul is a city on two continents and you feel that
everywhere — byzantine churches that became ottoman mosques, ancient bazaars
next to modern coffee shops, Europe and Asia visible across the water from each
other. The grand bazaar is a lot in the best way. The food is exceptional. The Bosphorus
at sunset looks like someone applied a filter.
don't miss: Istanbul, Cappadocia balloon sunrise, Pamukkale,
Ephesus
9. Vietnam
Vietnam has gone fully mainstream as a destination but
handles tourism better than most places and the actual experience is still
intact. prices still reasonable. Food is still extraordinary. The scenery is still
gorgeous. Just go.
Ha long bay is the famous place of this country. There are thousands
of limestone formations rising from green water, mist in the mornings, wooden
boats moving through it. It looks exactly like the photos and somehow still
hits harder in person. Hoi an is a lantern-lit ancient town where you can get
custom clothes made in 24 hours, eat incredible food by a river, and take
photos that come out good from every direction. Hanoi is chaotic and
fascinating and somewhere in that city is the best pho of your life, on a
sidewalk, at 7am, on a plastic stool. Sapa has terraced rice fields cut into
mountains and a completely different, quieter feel.
Vietnamese food might be the most underrated cuisine on
earth and i will die on that hill. pho, banh mi, bun cha, fresh spring rolls —
all of it perfect, all of it cheap, all of it available constantly.
don't miss: ha long bay overnight, hoi an, Hanoi old
quarter, Sapa

10. Iceland
Last on the list but honestly competes for the top spot in
pure spectacle. it's just unlike everywhere else. Volcanoes, glaciers, geysers,
waterfalls, lava fields — sometimes all visible from the same stretch of road.
your brain spends the first day trying to accept what it's looking at.
Summer is when to go. mild, all roads open, midnight sun
means more usable daylight than anywhere else. The golden circle hits three big
things in one day — geysers shooting water 30 meters up, a waterfall that makes
you feel very small, tectonic plates visibly pulling apart at Bingvellir. Blue
lagoon is touristy and absolutely worth it anyway — geothermal water, silica
mud, swim-up bar, surrounded by lava fields.
don't miss: golden circle, blue lagoon, Jökulsárlón, south coast drive
before you book
Get flights early — summer is peak everywhere and prices
move fast, especially iceland, japan, Norway. check visas before you fall in
love with an itinerary. get travel insurance because something always happens. Build in rest days because the trip where you cram eight cities into ten days
sounds great until day four when you hate yourself and your suitcase. Pack less
than you think. You will buy things. Leave room.
Every single place on this list will give you something you
talk about for years. p\Pick the one that made your stomach do something when you
read it — that's probably the right one.
